Award Winners
Community Award
‘Bellows’ – Bullengarook Community Newspaper – Margaret Boyd
A local project by that helped to increase the fire safety of Margaret Boyd’s rural community by including fire safety messaging in the Bullengarook Community Newspaper.
Education Award
Teenagers in Emergencies – Amy Foster, Jessica Bedggood, Tim Liddell and Sam Montague, students at Maffra Secondary College
These community-minded Year 9 students responded to the information needs of local teenagers to prepare for and respond to emergencies, including bushfires, in their community. They consulted with 160 teenagers in the area and used their feedback when creating their Teenagers in Emergencies booklet that was distributed to teens in their local area. They also organised a practical exercises day at their school where Year 9 students learnt basic bushfire and flood safety skills.
Fire Services Award
Wilsons Promontory Fire Community Engagement – Parks Victoria and DSE
This intensive pro-active community engagement program educated local communities and park visitors about the planned burning program at Wilsons Promontory National Park and also encouraged increased community participation in fire management planning at the park.
Media Award
Wimmera Summer Fire Awareness Media Campaign – ACE Radio 3WM, CFA and DSE
This media campaign over the 2008-09 summer fire season incorporated a suite of pre-recorded fire awareness messages for locals, workers, tourists and travellers in the Wimmera region, as well as live interviews with fire agency staff to inform and educate listeners across the Wimmera about fire safety.
RACV Insurance Award for Excellence
Community Services Training Packages Project – MFB
In this project, MFB led the introduction of a national project to embed basic home fire safety into the national qualifications for community sector workers, with fire safety now a component of the curriculum for the training of community sector workers nationwide.

RACV Insurance Fire Safety Grant
Teenagers in Emergencies – Maffra Secondary College
The $10,000 RACV Insurance Fire Safety Grant money enabled Maffra Secondary College to distribute the Teenagers in Emergencies booklet more broadly to teens across the Gippsland region. Year 7 and 8 students at the school were also able to participate in a practical exercises day, where they learnt basic fire and flood safety skills.
Note – No Special Incentive Grants were presented in 2009.

Entries Open
Entries for the 2010 Fire Awareness Awards are now open.
Awards are offered across eight main categories – these reward the hard work of individuals, groups and organisations who have carried out fire projects in Victoria.
Grants are also on offer including the $10,000 RACV Insurance Fire Safety Grant and Special Incentive Grants of up to $2,000 to develop and undertake a fire project, or further an existing fire project in Victoria.
All entries for grants and awards must be submitted by 4pm on Friday 20 August 2010.
