2011 Fire Awareness Awards

Award Categories

Awards recognise a wide variety of projects that reduce the number of fires, or the effects of fire, anywhere in Victoria. Projects can cover any fire type, including building fires and bushfires.

Fire projects can include:

  • fire safety
  • fire awareness
  • fire prevention
  • fire response
  • recovery after fire

Awards are presented to the best project in each of categories below. The RACV Insurance Award for Excellence is presented to the fire project adjudged to be most outstanding overall.

Community Award

Awarded to a not-for-profit, individual or community group for a fire project. There are eight types of community award:

  • Community Preparedness Award - recognises and highlights positive actions taken by a community group or individual to improve bushfire or home fire safety preparedness within Victorian towns or municipalities
  • Volunteer – for a fire project by an individual volunteer or volunteer group (including emergency services)
  • Individual Achievement – for outstanding personal contribution to a fire project (please note - awards are not given for long service)
  • Recovery – for a fire project by a community group or individual that helps people or the environment recover from fire
  • Multicultural – for a fire project by a community group or individual that supports the needs of a multicultural community
  • Youth – for a fire project by a community group or individual that supports the needs of youth, including children
  • Aged/Disability – for a fire project by a community group or individual that supports, or promotes, the needs of the aged or disabled
  • Other – for any other fire project by an individual or community group.

Education Award

For an innovative project by a primary, secondary, TAFE, university or other tertiary education facility, that educates students or the wider community about fire.

Fire Services Award

For an innovative fire project by fire service staff, brigade members, station, district depot or agency staff. Projects should be above and beyond normal business practices.

Media Award

For a media agency or individual journalist who has increased awareness of fire in the community through responsible reporting.

Industry Award

For an industry or organisation that has produced a fire safety product, service, workplace strategy or innovation.

Design/Construction Award

For innovative industrial design or construction fire safety project.

New & Emerging Technologies

For innovative use of new and emerging technologies by a group or individual, for fire safety.

Government and Municipal Award

For an innovative fire safety project by a government agency (excluding fire agencies).

Which category should I enter my project in?

Select the category based on who carried out the project, rather than who benefited from the project. For example, a local council who carried out a project assisting aged people in the community should nominate for a Local Government award, not an Aged/Disability community award.

You can also enter your project in more than one award category if it is eligible.
